    New Book on Kate M.

Agree. She might have been feeling it well before that which clouded judgement to even continue. Think it’s interesting about the operation of the unit - I don’t own a PLB so never had to read the instructions but I’ve talked to others who do and while they were aware of the antenna and face...

    Wow - Black Pond "Bushwhack"

It’s not the slide but rather the entire route - while it looks like a trail there is no official trai even beyond the slide. I remember the first time we did it was right when the “new” summit was identified and it was a true whack from old to new. Now it’s a trail. It has to do with the...

    Wow - Black Pond "Bushwhack"

While I haven’t activley led much with the Boston Chapter I’ve heard the same thing from them regarding the whacks to Owls Head being off limits.

    Wow - Black Pond "Bushwhack"

Thanks for this and the heat map a two total wastes of time that I don’t need when I’m on vacation and supposed to be doing stuff around the house.

    New Book on Kate M.

The unit was found in her pack with the antenna folded. It would appear that she initially signaled using it correctly and then closed it up and put it back in her pack. While it’s quote possible her pack was moved by the wind it’s more likely the mid-pings were the result of the folded antenna...

    New Book on Kate M.

I confirmed what I wrote earlier and what is in the book with Ty last night. It was the ResQLink 375. It is what’s listed in the SAR report (which he saw) and the photo inventory of what was in her pack. There were a few “spot” references and he has no idea where they got that information since...

    New Book on Kate M.

The decision to not enter the ravine seemed to have been made before the MSR team left (121) and the decision to go above treeline was going to be made along the route. When MSR met with F&G on Valley Way they decided they weren’t going above treeline. (128)

    New Book on Kate M.

Correct - no plans to go above treeline that first night.

    New Book on Kate M.

From page 16 of the book: Inmarsat Satelitte Phone ACR ResQLink 375 Personal Locator Beacon First ping was near where she was found. The unit was found inside the pack with the antenna folded up. The resulting mis-pings are believed to be the result of the unit not being kept in optimal...

    New Book on Kate M.

I first saw the Ty present this topic at the AMC's Annual Meeting in January and thought it was a great presentation - it focused on the why more than the how. It's easy to say she was foolish to go out in those conditions but that's not why she died. There were a number of instances where a...

Spot raises subscription prices to $199.99 + $14.99 for basic plan

So the outrageous price isn't enough, we need to charge you an additional 14.95 to maintain the lines.

Telos / Williams Pond Road - Winter 2017

The new bunkhouse seems to be a hit!

Telos / Williams Pond Road - Winter 2017

We got lucky with the access via Williams Pond Road, not so lucky with the Marston Trail. With the new cabin over there they might get more traffic.

    Your NE67 Finish

Finished the first round of 67 on Sugarloaf, then finished the second round of 67 on Sugarloaf, and will finish the third round on, you guessed it, Sugarloaf (only have Abraham, Spaulding, and Sugarloaf left). None of them were "planned", they just happened as other trips got planned and cancelled.

Winter Expedition to Katahdin / Baxter State Park

There was actually a sign about fat bikes at the sign in kiosk but I don't remember the details. Not sure if they are allowed on the road to Roaring Brook since it isn't open to the public for snow mobiles - only park rangers. The other issue would be if you are looking to submit your name to...

    Dry River Campsites

Thanks Dennis. I was going to call the Saco Ranger on Monday but was hoping to get a jump on planning. The announcement from the forest service said that both the Dry River and Isolation trails were re-opened so I was hoping there would be a clear (but rough) path up to Davis Path. Will update...

    Dry River Campsites

I was thinking of combining a two-day Presidential Traverse with a side trip through the Dry River Wilderness to get Isolation too. Wanted to stay in the Dry River since I'm thinking that Nauman will be full this upcoming weekend because of the Monday Holiday. I've seen several references to the...

Planning first trip ever to ADK's - thoughts?

If you want to stay in the high peaks area you have plenty of options for that length of time - you can go in and stay at the same place for all four nights or move around each night. Some of the best spots that offer the most options are the lean tos on the west side of Lake Colden (can get to...
