    Mount Adams Firetower\Bear Canisters

When and where do we sign up to do some trail work on Adams? It was my first real mountqain and is only about a few miles away from my familys cabin so I have no excuse not to help. I haven't seen a map of the acquisition for a while so I can't remember the borders of the territory; will some...

Approach to the High Peaks via Ausable River

I've camped on what I've believed has been state land on my way to Sawteeth. Of course I did it ultra-low impact, hammock style. I am sure that I saw a few wider areas near the trail going up to Sawteeth that you could probably put a tent on. The main reason I use a hammock is the flexibility...

Spruce trap - How to escape one

Ooohh those spruce traps are diabolical, like a chinesefinger trap. I have fallen in a few and usually you can roll around until the snow is packed enough to get your feet under you again and claw your way out. I remember once I twisted so bad when I fell that one shoe was pointed backward with...

Top ten innovations of all time

Oooohh duct tape, I like it. As anyone who has ever watched the Red Green show knows you can do anything with duct tape. I've seen bags made out of it so packs aren't out of the question. Its reflective to some degree right? you could certainly whip togethera sleeping/shelter system...

    Glissading Thingies

I used one a few times myself, they do go fast but I found myself slipping off frequently and going into a tumble as the less slippery parts of my body bit into the snow. I would snag one of my toes into the handle cut out and try to keep tension with my legs pointed straight ahead...

Top ten innovations of all time

What a fun thread, the ideas keep coming. How about new materials for canoeing and kayaking. Aluminum or wood was the choice when I was young, then came royalex and all the other types of composite hulls. When I first went Kayaking with NOLS in '83 I came back from my trip and checked out what...

Top ten innovations of all time

I could swear that the old Optimus 111b and 8R had pumps but that was a long time ago and I was but a child and not to be trusted with anything that could go boom. Surely they predated MSR.

Top ten innovations of all time

Socks, socks, socks. I don't get half the blisters I got in my teen years and I would say at least half of that is the result of better socks. When I started out ragg wool socks with a liner if you were lucky was the pinnacle of technology. Now I would never contemplate taking those socks on a...

    Glissading Thingies

I am not sure about the rocket having never actually used it myself but the bottom has pronounced ridges that can act as keels and I have seen people going down hiking trails and banking off of the sides of the trail and going into the woods. It seemed more manueverable than other types i've...

Top ten innovations of all time

Any and all high tech fabrics. just imagine being stuck with only cotton or wool to choose from. No polypro, capilene, fleece, quick drying nylon shorts etc.

    Glissading Thingies

I've used a saucer sled going down the trails, feel like Captain America with the sled strapped to my back going up. Jamming your legs or arms in the snow is the only way to steer those things. It can be terrifying at times. Took a shortcut down Mansfield on the slopes once and I thought the...

    MSR's New Snowshoe

Good question Its hard to find the right point on the continuum of impact which ranges from heading into the wilderness in a loin cloth and mocassins to driving a Segway down a hardened clay and gravel path. I know that hiking poles used to tick me off royally because of all the little pock...

    MSR's New Snowshoe

I haven't found them on MSR's web page yet so they may not have reached the market yet. perhaps it is too late for this years season and they are aiming for next season. Gives me something to save my money for over the summer.

    MSR's New Snowshoe

Here's a description of a new style of snowshoe from MSR. "The MSR Lightning Ascent snowshoe features a new approach to frame design. The patent-pending design provides unbeatable 360-degree traction and shaves a half pound or more of weight off the average competitor. With the help of a gait...

Pac boots and heel lift (blisters)

Once while hiking the Great Range through Basin I started to develop blisters early on at Bear Den I put on moleskin but it didn't help much. I hiked through the pain but the next day i was contemplating hopping to the trail head. A fellow camper lent me some duct tape, i put a xl bandaid over...

    Megamid for winter shelter?

Good feedback on the pyramid type shelters. I think when I scrape together the money that is the way I will go. I need to look at all types first and the silnylon versions. Anybody able to compare the the different ones? Kiva vs megamid vs kifaru vs whatever. Anchoring is my one big concern...

    Megamid for winter shelter?

I use a backpacking hammock in the summer and find myself in need of a winter shelter so as to not be reliant on leanto's. I am drawn to the Megamid and the Betamid and their silnylon versions for reasons of weight, price, simplicity and techweeny greed. However as they are bottomless I wonder...

    North Creek Region

You might try Vanderwacker. It isn't a high peak but it is a nice climb. Never done it in winter so I can't say much about that. Doesn't Garnet Hill have an extensive snowshoe/x-c/mt bike Network? I thought I remember them being not far from a beautiful lake with some lovely small mountains...

    Snowshoe/hillclimb/race !

Oooo, a race up Blue Mt, that sounds intrigueing. Blue Mt was probably my first winter peak. I went up it back in the '70s when I was in boarding school in that area. We had wooden x-c skis and at least two people broke theirs on the trail. It would be circular to revisit the MT.

    Snowshoe/hillclimb/race !

Says in the paper that it is the 6th annual uphill snowshoe challenge so I expect many more years. Stowe is having its annual winter carnival starting Friday and running through the 25th. Events include " the worlds coldest parade" plenty of athletic events too. Check out...
