Hammer Time (Favorite short, steep trail sections)

And the need is...? OK, of course this begs the question, and I'm sure there are many others who want to know too: What is the "need" you are planning for? Do you have some adventure hike coming up, or...? Curious minds want to know, if you can tell us! ; )

    Zealand Mtn 4/29/2012

thoughts on Zeacliff trail? Roy and Becca: what's your sense of the Zeacliff trail going down off the cliff and into the valley there? Icy, snowy still? Also, is the top of Zeacliff still boggy, or dried out by now? This week is a tough one--has it stayed cold enough up in NH (dismal and grey...

Hancocks via Hancock Notch Trail, Cedar Brook Trail, Hancock loop 4/28

Date of Hike: Saturday 4/28 Trail Conditions: To add to the information provided by Bryan... Hancock trail fairly dry and clear--thank you! There are many water crossings on the Cedar Brook trail that are now fairly high and sometimes a bit confusing because of the river braiding, plus the...

    Hiking in Montana

Glacier National Park I don't know how long you're going to be on the state or how much driving you want to do, but how about Glacier National Park. Gorgeous scenery, great hikes, some cool old lodges. I went about 15 years ago and loved it. Worth the trip....http://www.nps.gov/glac/index.htm :)

    Trail Vandals at Pondicherry Refuge

sad story/history of name? It always makes me so mad when people just CAN'T leave nice things alone for others to enjoy. So intentially malicious! Very sorry to hear this. I was drawn into the thread by the name Pondicherry. I looked on the site but can't find any info on why it would be...

Sandwich Dome via Smarts Brook trail and Sandwich Mtn trail 4/7/12

Date of Hike:4/7/12 Trail Conditions: Only a little muddy and wet lower down, but mainly dry. A few icy sections on the Smarts Brook Trail as it ascends through woods--my guess is that these patches will melt this week. Icy snow and plain old ice on Sandwich Mt trail from intersection with...

Lost--Boiled wool heavy mitten on Smarts Brook Trail 4/7

I dropped a heavy gray boiled wool mitten on the Smarts Brook Trail in the woods section before you hit the open field as you head back to the parking lot. It's not a big deal, but if anyone has picked it up, I'd love to have it back--great mittens and of course useless if I only have one! --Carla

Has anyone else read "Wild" by Cheryl Strayed?

will make a great movie I think it would be great if Wild came out as a movie. I can see Reese Witherspoon starring, but she better get into decent hiking shape first. Maybe she should do the 48 to get fit, and then go back West to do some filming on location. This really could be an Eat...

Hi Tom! I am now just reading your book. It's a real pleasure. Some of my oldest friends live in Newburyport, so that angle is fascinating, but for sure I was drawn in by the hiking aspects, having done "the 48" myself a couple of times. Never in winter though--have done a few winter peaks, but...

Pueblo Mountains in Oregon--anyone been?/Sierra Club feedback

Hi--I am considering a backpacking trip with the Sierra Club in the Pueblo Mtns in Oregon in late May. Any of you all been there? It looks really interesting--very remote and unknown. (This is the trip I'm considering http://www.sierraclub.org/outings/national/brochure/12110a.aspx) I've never...

Has anyone else read "Wild" by Cheryl Strayed?

Yes, that's her real name In the book she explains how she came to have that interesting last name. I liked Wild so much that I am now reading her novel--"Torch"....there are many overlaps--it;s clear that she based the novel on her real life--very interesting and well done.

Has anyone else read "Wild" by Cheryl Strayed?

I just finished reading Wild, by Cheryl Strayed. It's a memoir about a woman "finding herself" by hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. Very good and interesting and emotional. I would describe it as "Eat Pray Love" meets "A Walk in the Woods." And I mean that in a very good way. Great descriptions...

    Colorado's Rocky Mt NP

Flattop is a must A few others have mentioned this hike too--I wanted to chime in. It's a great day hike up to 12,000 feet and really magnificent once you reach the top. I went in early July last year--be prepared for some snow on the trail and then a glacier crossing too. We didn't use any...

    Hiking in southern India--near Ooty

I'll be in India in mid-January and doing a little hiking/hill walking out of Ooty, which is an old hill station in southern India. I've done research online and got some idea of what the hiking might be like, but I'm wondering if any of you VFTTers have had personal experience in the area...

Tour du Mont Blanc Planning Q's

No ascent? It really is only a day trip...(not the easiest one, but...) Una and Michael--I haven't done the TMB, but have climbed Mont Blanc, in early September, about 8 years ago. I think once you get in the area you're going to want to make the trip up to the top of Mont Blanc itself--it's...
