    compass vs gps

When I us my GPS, I always have a map and compass for backup. I always have at least one backup for my navigation when I hike. I learned this from experience because I've had both GPS and compass fail me in the field. I've had batteries die and I own at least two compasses that no longer...

    clueless about adk...

I thought the main problem with mud season was not the mud at all. It was the thin soil up high that is partially frozen and partially thawed. When it’s in that state it becomes more susceptible to erosion from foot traffic. The Adirondacks are more prone to this due to the fact that the...

    Training for the Long Trail

If all goes to plan, I’ll be hiking the LT from Lincoln Gap to the northern terminus at the end of June or early July. The hike will be over 9 or 10 days. I can’t wait. I plan to do some training hikes here in NY in the spring. Right now I’m hoping to hike the Dix Range traverse, a Great...

    Non 4x drive on Corey's

If you are planning on going this weekend you might want to keep in mind that it is supposed to rain Thursday and Friday and then the temps are to drop down below 0. I would expect that this would make the road very icy.

    Major Nor-easter for New England

We got less than 1/2" in the southern Adirondacks, less to the north of us. :(

    Major Nor-easter for New England

Looks like the Adirondacks won't get much from this storm as usual with costal storms. We need more lake effect snow!

How much winter gear "Haven't" you used this "winter"?

Most of my winter gear has been unused this season as I've only managed to go hiking once so far.

    Gulf Hagas help

I was there in August of 2004. The first water crossing required us to remove our shoes and socks (the deepest spots where about mid calf to knee deep), but the second crossing we could rock hop across.

    ultralight packs--need advice!

In order for an ultralight pack to work comfortably, you need to reduce your pack weight below 30lbs, below 25lbs is ideal. Ultralight parks are not designed to carry higher loads than this. Doing so can result in damaging your park or even worse your back. I just purchased a Granite Gear...

    The Evolution of GEAR

I think the funny thing I’ve found, at least for myself anyway, is the more the technology advances the more they go back to some of the more low tech products. I probably own and use more things made of wool than I did 5 – 10 years ago. I’ve found wool to be far superior to synthetic fleece...

    Frankenpine approved by APA today

One thing I find nice about the Adirondacks it that most places I'm out of cell phone range. I don't have to worry about my day-to-day life interrupting me when I'm trying to relax. Am I the only one that feels that way?

    What Constitutes the Great Range?

That’s quite possible. I’m not a geologist nor do I pretend to be one. Most of my knowledge is based from my hiking partner and the website I lined in my earlier post. The one thing I’m sure of is that the experts in the field don’t really know what is causing the uplift, but they have some...

    What Constitutes the Great Range?

For myself I view the Great Range as ending on Haystack. Marcy, Little Marcy, Gray, Skylight, and Redfield are part of there own separate group. The divide from the Great Range is at the col between Haystack and Marcy, where the Phelps Trail meets the Range Trail. I do consider Sawteeth and...

    What Constitutes the Great Range?

The summit of Armstrong, as well as Giant, are made of syenite gneiss, the rest of the High Peaks are made of metanorthosite. The reason for this difference is linked to the origin of the Adirondack Mountains themselves. Much of the rock that we see in the High Peaks and the Adirondacks in...

    What Constitutes the Great Range?

I'll throw in some more confusion. :D Geologically specking it could be argued that Armstong is not part of the Great Range due to the fact that the rock that makes up the mountain is different form the rock of the rest of the range.

Might also be the fact that there was no trail off of Mount Colden down to Lake Colden at the time. http://docs.unh.edu/NY/mrcy53nw.jpg

    digital camera resolution

I'd save you're money and go with the 5MP. I'm currently using a 5MP Olympus and have blown pictures up to 12 x 16 without any noticeable pixelation.
