Eons ago, I did get a refund for a stay at Lakes due to an heavy rainstorm that made the trails up unsafe. AMC didn't give me a hard time, but I did get the impression that it doesn't happen unless the weather is pretty extreme.

I've heard it's one of the steeper sections, but from the maps it looks flatter than the hiking trails in the area, no? Agreed, though, the Catamount is definitely not maintained as a hiking trail and gets messy in places.

The Catamount (xc ski trail) and VAST (snowmobile) trails might be flatter - I don't think either has established tent sites, but dispersed camping should be an option.

It's my fave as well - although I prefer the "hiking and biking" version, which also has mileage for the carriage roads. Carriage Roads may be more "gentle stroll" than "vigorous hike" but you can use them to connect trails for longer loops, etc.

I love the trails around Parkman, Sargeant and Bald Mountains - great views, some fun rock scrambles here and there, and they tend to be less crowded. You could also put together some longer loops combining Dorr and Cadillac. If you're on Facebook, you can check out the Acadia NP hiking page...
