    Old school VFTT

While I don't have a picture I met Darren on one of my first winter hikes and we did Welch Dickey together with a group including Bob K who I also met for the first time and both told me about VFTT. Shill have a couple of my old polypro VFTT shirts.....but they shrank (that's my story).

    17 Years....It feels like yesterday

Not to thread drift but years ago I met Cath Goodwin on Beaver Brook. Instead of frosty beverages as a reward for her trail work she asked that we donate to the Waterman Alpine Stewardship Fund. To this day I donate in the name of trail adopters every year and receive a nice note from Laura...

Easy hikes to good foliage views on Wednesday

Consider Black Mt in Benton or Mt Tremont off 302 (first preference!). Both have great payoffs with a little work.

    Ski resort parking areas

We did Saddleback and the Horn last week. There is parking for hikers on the left just before you hit the "rotary" next to the lodge at Saddleback. It was an out and back so I'm not aware of the shuttle status....didn't see one either. We were told the lodge is off limits to the general public...

    GoreTex Tape

Try Sailmaker Supply for some sticky Dacron spinnaker tape and you can get it in assorted colors too.. It's about $7 for a good size roll plus shipping. Once you apply it add a little heat (iron). I've used it with great luck on gaiters from crampon holes so it should be really good for tents...

    The Captain (NH)

I think it was only a mile to two up the SRR. We took our time but think it was 7 hours or so. The woods aren't to bad, hit some steeps that slowed us so we needed to go more right. Supposedly there is an old tent site that's a marker but we never found it. You'll find the road walk and through...

    The Captain (NH)

Follow Sawyer River past Carrigain parking area until you hit a gate and park there (gate is closed and there's a kiosk) You have some small logging roads to walk first on the right, straight and then past a campsite in a gravel area then start the whack. A couple of areas have minor brush to...

Trail conditions -- Mt. Cabot from the north?

We went up and did Hutchins yesterday parking at Mill Brook where we met 2 girls that did Cabot. Yes the black flies were brutal almost all day for us! They said they had no problems getting Cabot,. Bulge, and the Horn, and didn't report any show stopping blow downs. Hope this helps

    Best Scar Ridge Winter Route

We did East Scar from East Pond Trail last weekend. Had to break East Pond Trail to the height of the land (2800-2900) and then it was a difficult whack to the summit. Figure we got within 20-40 feet of the canister but hit a massive blowdown area we couldn't navigate around it or through it...

    Mount Cabot (8/12/12)

We did Cabot yesterday via Heaths Gate ( Mt Cabot Trail) We didn't see any signs from the start until Kilkenny and the new "no longer maintained" sign. The trail is still easy to follow, just a couple blowdowns, but it is growing over. Even that tall sign at the 3 gates is gone.

    Scar Ridge, Middle Peak 2/4/12

Nothing like taking a quick dip before a long trek! Great day as always Tom and I'm looking forward to crossing East off soon. Based on the blood loss and amount of bandaids used I truly think these are the most appropriately named peaks around.

Sewing on Lash Tabs/ Lash Points

Hey Kev, if you're serious about getting one then look for manufacturers like Read's not Singer. They are used for sailmaking and there are quite a few sites out there to grab a used one. They don't have all the lame features, just heavy duty sewing...

Blueberry Ledge Trail on Whiteface (NH)

I did Whiteface/East Sleeper last week from Blueberry. I think the only problem will be when you hit the ledges the last 500 feet or so. There's a couple of tight spots but nothing that should be a problem. You may want to take the poles off your pack at that point (if you're carrying them on...

    Madison Hut Renovations / Rebuild

I saw the article in the AMC Outdoors mag last month. It didn't sound as intesnse a renovation project as it does in this blog. Could be they decided to do more than originally planned since this past June and are just letting everyone know...again.
