    Black Bear Range Expanding?

I live in Putnam County in Southeast NY and in the past 5 years or so there have been reports/sightings of bears in the area. At first I thought this was ridiculous, but recently I heard that a bear was captured in Westchester County by the DEC and then released in Ninham Mtn State Forest, which...

    Courtesy to hunters

I hunt and let me tell ya'll sometin, I dont go more than a mile from the road because if I am lucky enough to get a deer, I dont want to have that long drag back to the car. Some people go way back into the mountains looking for the big buck, but there are less deer in the high peaks (Blackhead...

    Favorite celebratory beverages

I would have to say some whiskey to warm the stomach is a great reward. Or, to be a real mountain man, some moonshine!

    Places to stay in Maine

Thanks for all the suggestions. I really like the sound of the Loon Lodge, but I dont know if the rest of the family would be up for that but I will have to go there this winter for XC skiing and ice fishing.

Hiking near North-South Lake in Catskills

There are plenty of nice hikes near the campground. Kaaterskill High Peak is a very nice hike with nice views, and the trailhead is only a few miles from the campground. Another nice hike is on the Escarpment trail to North Mtn and Stoppel Point. These are just north of the campground. There are...

    Fir Brook (Catskills)

Today I went to the Fir Brook and the Willowemoc area. The Fir Brook was rather small, too small for canoeing. I tried the fishing on the upper section first which meandered through spruce bogs, and there were no trout just Blacknose Dace. Further down there was Brook Trout where the water was...

Does anybody know of the Fir Brook in the Catskills? Its just outside of Willowemoc, and I am thinking of going canoeing and fishing there. Can anyone tell me anything about it such as ownership, parking, how good the fishing is, and if it is significant enough to canoe? Below are the links...

    Tent caterpillars in Catskills

Last weekend while driving on Rt 28 I noticed that the mountains looked a little brown in some places. As I got closer I saw that on the southern exposures mostly, that in many places the leaves had been eaten by caterpillars, probably gypsy moth caterpillars. From there I went up Rt 214 to...

Mountain Lions in Northern New England

I think that eventually mountain lions will return to all remote places in the northeast. Places that used to be farms are growing back to woods, and that is more habitat for cougars, and after years of over harvesting they are finally starting to make a come back.
