I recently went car camping w/ my wife in the ADKs, her EMS 20' down bag stored its whole life in original stuff sack since our 1st backpack in 1979 was like new. Well almost like new. She's used it maybe 20 trips.

    Mt Greylock map

Yes, it was snowing heavily when I left NewAshford Sunday to head home in Putnam County NY. Wise decision 1 leave early, and 2 do not cut west to Rt 22 in NY til I was 50 miles south. My home is about 2 miles from Rt 22. NO snow at my home.

    Mt Greylock map

Finally, I wound up doing this hike Saturday, but in the opposite direction. I used the state forest map, more to my liking than the WOC map I purchased. Thanks for all the helpful responses. (That is Money Brook to AT to Hopper - Sperry Rd - Haley Farm loop)

    Beyond Peak Capacity In NY

For what it's worth I've been hiking exclusively in central and southern Daks this year. While the scenery is not as spectacular, it's still pretty damn good and it seems the hiking traffic is cut by about 90%. This after spending maybe 40 years of hiking the high peak area and less frequently...

    Mt Greylock map

I'm about to mail a check to pick up the guide book and map. Sounds like the best one. I will plan my route when I get the map and can actually see the trails, unlike my AMC map. (It is pretty old) Thanks again for all the help.

I hiked the Santanoni Range in winter with Alain. I could not keep up with him even as he was breaking trail thru +/- 12 " snow. Pin-Pin and Jr are rabbits.

I have no photos but I saw on Moreau Lake near Glens Falls 4 adult size common loons swimming and fishing together yesterday. Saturday I saw 2 (separate) on the same lake.

Me and a pal spent a great weekend kayaking and hiking in north central Ct. paddling in Bigelow Hollow State Park (2 ponds w/ launch sites, and 1 pond requiring +/- 1.25m carry in. We did not paddle the back country pond but did hike around the area to scout the carry in which looks easy w/ a...

    Smallest dog to take backpacking...

My small 10 lb dog Yoda (RIP) was brought up hiking. She could handle up to 12 miles before getting tired.(then she would rest at every opportunity). Can think of less than 1/2 dozen times I had to help her, in +/- 10 years. She was a chihuahua/poodle/terrier mix.

    Views from the Carribean?

St John has wonderful hiking,w/an extensive trail system, bootleg trails, (see Trailbandit above), old roads dating back to (a long time ago) and long shoreline scrambles. Also fantastic beaches, some you can only get to by foot or boat.

What have you done in the mountains that could have resulted in a rescue, but didn't?

Excellent thread! My story took place in Scotland, with my 2 sons. We were attempting to climb Ben Nevis via the CMD Arete, a roundabout route requiring good navagation skills. A nice sunny warm start evolved into a cool damp windy misty day as we gained elevation. A wrong turn took us to a dead...
