Hypothermic hiker rescued from Little Haystack by helicopter

I think that it is important to note that the hiker this week and another about this same time two years ago, within a month of Emily Sotelo’s demise off trail in Lafayette Brook, dropped off the ridge well before reaching the summit of Little Haystack, which is absolutely necessary to find the...

Hypothermic hiker rescued from Little Haystack by helicopter

A blast of names from the past! I would be not surprised that those folks sewed pre-Wild Things equivalents to Bothy Bags, as for a competent seamstress, I think that the sewing is easier compared to manufacture of tents or clothing.

    VFTT group hike?

It has been probably over a decade since I attended a VftT gathering at Barnes Field, which fits with Kevin Rooney’s recollections. BTW, for newcomer winter NH4 hikers here, the Brutus Bushwhack alternative to the slide on Owls Head is named for Kevin’s Newfie, who was not into climbing steep...

    2024: Leas snow than normal

I put “climate denier” in quotes because Koonin does indeed deny that we should attempt to do anything to reverse anthropogenic global warming (AGW), the more appropriate term for the impact of burning of fossil fuels that ramped up dramatically beginning with the Industrial Revolution in the...

    2024: Leas snow than normal

The term existential is not limited to humanity, but can apply to the existence of anything. Where humanity has been already involved as an existential threat is with the extinction of thousands of other species, many by direct over-killing, others by destruction of their habitats.

How Hard Was The Snowpack Hit Yesterday

I have a wire saw somewhere in my archives from 50+ years ago and agree with others here that they are a joke. Mine had rings on each end that would destroy my fingers in seconds. I invested in a Silky Katanaboy 500 folding saw with its wide 18” long stainless steel blade and offset teeth to...

Hypothermic hiker rescued from Little Haystack by helicopter

The red Bothy Bag seen on the ground from the Blackhawk in the FB photos (thanks, Ear Drum) is probably one that was made for PVSART (two of the rescuers on the ground wearing the slime yellow-green parkas are PVSART members) or NHF&G by Wild Things when they had a manufacturing shop in North...

    2024: Leas snow than normal

Maybe the seaweed of choice can be used to guide genetic engineering for producing large quantities of whatever ingredients are necessary to reduce methane-burping in cattle?

    2024: Leas snow than normal

No, Steven Koonin is not a climate scientist but rather a theoretical physicist and a “climate denier” since at least as early as 2007, albeit a very smart one. He was chosen to be undersecretary for science by Nobel laureate Steven Chu, Obama’s Secretary of Energy, for whom Koonin served for...

    VFTT group hike?

Back in the day, there were “gatherings” of VftT folks on weekends, with a group site at Barnes Field near Dolly Copp campground on the west side of Rte 16 south of Gorham a regular venue. Lots of daytime activities included hikes followed by supper and libations around a campfire during the...

    2024: Leas snow than normal

In trying to think more about a solution here, maybe Mr. Peabody could load his empty coal train cars with seaweed in Everett, Washington, for the return trip to the Powder River basin in Wyoming and Montana where a lot of cattle graze?

    Madison Gulf Bridge closed

OK, then I think that the USFS should run another narrow corridor of non-wilderness down the Twin Brook Trail from Galehead hut to include 13 Falls campground, like was done for Guyot campsite, albeit at 2.6 miles a bit longer. Easy as adding a line on the map. No heavy lifting.

    Madison Gulf Bridge closed

Good point. I cannot recall but are the tent sites at 13 Falls gravel pads as opposed to wood platforms? For the lean-to and tent platforms at Guyot campsite there is long narrow corridor of non-wilderness that looks like a gerrymandering boundary (not trying to be political).

    2024: Leas snow than normal

Tricky part is getting the seaweed to cattle a great distance from the seashore, like in the Midwest.

How Hard Was The Snowpack Hit Yesterday

I just learned that it will be after the holidays before the maintainers are available to begin clean up of Glencliff Trail. So, if anyone wants to help sooner, please have at it. I am sure that the maintainers would be most appreciative. My guess is that a lot can be done with trim saws (6-8”...

How Hard Was The Snowpack Hit Yesterday

The two recent devastation reports for Glencliff Trail and the one recent report for the Carter-Moriah Trail between the North Carter Trail and the summit of Mount Moriah pretty much span the Whites, but we could use a few more reports to fill in the huge geographic gap between them. Before the...

How Hard Was The Snowpack Hit Yesterday

After maintaining Glencliff Trail with a friend for 25 years, two years ago we handed it off to a couple much younger friends, whom cut and oversee glades for GBAC. My guess is that they will get Glencliff Trail cleaned up well before spring, but given the reports from yesterday, it may take a...

    2024: Leas snow than normal

It has been a few years since we have had a thread survive for eight pages. How many pages long was the “mountain lions in New England” thread, perhaps my all-time favorite?

    2024: Leas snow than normal

Good question, and one that IPCC addresses annually with its conferences, the most recent one (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, last month. The Paris Agreement was reached at the end of the 2015 meeting (COP21) and concluded that we must keep average global temperatures below an increase of 1.5 C...

    2024: Leas snow than normal

Yes, surface meltwater has been especially a problem for mountaintop tropical core cores, as the O18/O16 isotope ratios and seasonal temperature signals become more muted. Try googling Quelccaya Ice Cap ice core in Peru and the name Lonnie Thompson to see the impact of surface melting between...
