Trail Conditions - Loon service road and herd path in good shape. Descent to W. Scar col was nice open woods. It became a nightmarish combination of blowdowns, dense woods and pointed dead spruce/fir branches from there until about 3,400 feet. It was a bit easier to below the summit, where we found a herd path that took us to the canister. Descent to 3,200 feet was an easy combination of a herd path and open woods It once again became nightmarish from there to herd path, only this time we had to climb some steep rock faces to add to the fun. Fortunately, temps were moderate and everything was dry.

Special Equipment Required - gloves, GPS/map/compass, glasses or goggles, body armor and a lack of common sense

Comments - As stated in Jason Berard's ROT "TR: and Jabberwalk's thread on W. Scar, we had a supremely rough time. We hit the "magic line" on the lower part of the ascent, but then lost it. We hit the "magic line" on the upper part of the descent, but lost that too. We knew we were too far south on the descent, but the evil forest would not let us correct to get north of the ridge. We just decided to plow through, hoping it would get better:rolleyes:. We all signed the canister (first entry since mid August)!

I have a nice "scar ridge" on my forehead, cuts/bruises that resemble poison ivy on my lower legs and a bruise on my bicep shaped like the Hale Bopp comet. Don't think my hiking mates fared much better. Views from Loon were spectacular, however, as was the company of my fellow hikers. Scar was #99 of the New England 100 Highest for Double Bow:cool:, somewhere in the 60's or 70's for Jason Berard and Greg and #92 for me. Like Jason said, I'll never go again!
