This morning there was about 1/4" of snow at the trailhead. Surprisingly, the snow did not increase that much as we went up. There was perhaps 2" of snow at the hut and perhaps a slight bit more on top.

The stream crossings were difficult in the morning due especially to the ice on the rocks. The best system for crossing seemed to be to step on rocks that were slightly under water. When we came back most of the ice had melted and the crossings were much easier. The bridge mentioned in the White Mountain Guide no longer exists.

The trail was quite wet in many places. I had my winter boots on so I just waded through most of it. There were no significant blowdowns.

There was enough snow to make the trail slippery, especially on the steep sections. Traction devices might have been useful, but the snow was so thin that whatever you wore would have been severely knocked about by the rocks. I chose to bareboot the whole way and it was not particularly difficult.

By the time we returned to the river, most of the snow from there to the trailhead had melted.

The temperature when we started was below freezing. It reached 50* at the hut. What a beautiful day. It was very peaceful at the hut. This is the only hut I've been to where I get the feeling each time that I'd like to just sit for a while and read a book. As we descended we passed one other hiker. He was the only one we saw all day.
