Here is the 2008 Garden hiker shuttle Info. Tom

2008 HIKER SHUTTLE INFO.

Once again the Town of Keene will manage the Garden Parking Lot in Keene Valley in accordance with an Adopt a Resource Agreement with New York State Department of Conservation. The Town of Keene will also serve as operator of a public transportation system that will serve hikers and the general public.

This will mark the tenth year of this project, which was initiated in response to the illegal and unsafe parking that prevailed. The parking fees pay for attendants on weekends, winter snowplowing of the Garden, Roostercomb and Roaring Brook Parking Lots, portable toilets, information kiosk and over $11,000 in equipment for [ocal search and rescue squads.

Commencing Friday, May 16th, a fee of $5.00 (Canadian at par) per day will be assessed for parking at the Garden Lot. The daily fee will continue through the month of October. An attendant will be at the Garden Lot from 1 :00 PM until 7:00 PM on Fridays and from 7:00 AM until 7:00 PM on Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays during this period. Town Employees and DEC Rangers will monitor the lot during the week.

The shuttle will operate from the Southwest corner of Marcy Field, off Route 73, when the Garden Parking Lot is full, beginning with two Holiday Weekends in May, from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, as follows:
Victoria Day Weekend - May 17th, 18th and 19th Memorial Day Weekend - May 24th, 25th and 26th

Shuttle operation will resume on Saturday, June 28th, operating on Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays. October 19 will be the last day of operation.
The shuttle will normally leave Marcy Field parking lot every % hour and on the hour.

The fee remains at $3.00 (Canadian at par) per person for a round trip.

Thank you for your continued support in this project. We hope that reasonable management will ensure continued access to the High Peaks Wilderness.

If we aren't careful, those Canadians will start complaining about us taking their money at par - the loonie is worth more than the greenback now!

Can someone explain this one?

The DEC APPEARS to be contravening its own directives by granting a permit to the Town of Keen to run a shuttle, and thus promote hiking, during the mud season - about early May to mid June according to the ADK web site - a period that the DEC specifically discourages eastern High Peaks hiking for environmental purposes.

The only reason I can think of is that the DEC must feel the two holiday weekend crowds are inevitable and that having no shuttle would just worsen the environmental impact, at least in and around the Garden and along the road leading to it.
