After cutting across Isreal's River Rd and Whipple Rd, I drove south on NH116 .7 miles to the Mud Pond TH. This was the third and final objective for the day. It was now 11:20 am. The Mud Pond Tr is a gravel path with a .1 mile board walk, ending at Mud Pond, a secluded pond in the Pondicherry Wildlife Refuge. All pets must be leashed and it is handicap accessable. This is a good hike for children and I would see about ten of them along the way. Total mileage is 1.2 with 70' of uphill on the return.
End of the line.
We then turned back and returned to my truck in the parking lot. I felt a little silly with my pack on for this short hike but it had my camera and water so it was just as easy to put it on as it would be to carry those objects seperately.
It was now 11:45am and I was done with all three objectives for the day. It was fun exploring new trails and even finding the trailheads. Almost as fun as peakbagging.
I had thought of also doing the Colonel Whipple Tr and the Little Cherry Pond Loop but did not have enough time. Also I noticed that the Colonel Whipple Tr is not in the AMC White Mtn Guide nor is it on the Redlining worksheet. Does anyone know why? I found the TH on Whipple Rd and the trail is very lightly used.
