Date of Hike: 4/12/08
Trail Conditions: packed snow in 8 inch band that you could walk on without a problem, but snow up to your waist if you step off. Fast foot-deep water on the crossing of Cascade Brook - boulder hopped half way across then just had to ford. could be dangerous if you don't know what you're doing and don't have several pairs of socks. sunny most of the day, 40-50 degrees.
Special Equipment Required: Bare booted it, but snowshoes are advisable (and much safer). No need for traction - snow was soft.
Comments: Had fun sliding down Lonesome Lake Tr on my butt... though I'm quite sore from it today. Also - the Pemi trail from the Lafayette campgrounds to the Basin parking area is not walkable without snowshoes - but the bike path is an easier alternate (continue on Lonesome lake trail past the turn off for Pemi, the bike path is quite wide and well packed and hard to miss).
