All those who had the opportunity to attend Sherpa John, Sarah, and Team Sherpa's premier walked away knowing that they had wisely chosen to spend their Saturday evening. John's film is insightful, at times poignant, funny, and very informative (just give it to the next person who asks you "why?"). There are many spots in the film where I found myself identifying with what I was watching on the screen. It was great to walk into the theater a bit late (due to a previous engagement) and hear one of my hiking friends call out "Sherp - up here!". I truly felt among friends in this audience.
The film chronicles John (and Sarah's) quest to "chase the list", but does much more. John researched the history of the FTFC, interviewing both some of the driving forces, and some of the more colorful and accomplished members. He also interviewed many who were in the midst of their own quest, offering their thoughts on what the 48 mean to them. The overall theme to me was how so many of us do this for so many different reasons, but we all attempt to end up at the same place: one final step to #48.
I was taken aback by the insightful picture that John painted throughout the film. More insight here than many who have live 4 of John's lifetimes! I was drawn in on one of the early shots of him driving up 93 paying more attention to the mountains around him than to the road (we all do that, don't we?). Yes, I scare quite a few of my passengers.
Woven into, but not dominating the film is John's deep drive toward helping to fund research to cure diabetes, which aflflicts his chosen life partner, Sarah. If we all shared this level of passion, we could all help to make this a better place. Is there a somewhat selfish interest here? For sure - but we should all be this selfish!
An excellent film, a great cause, a good man, with fantastic famliy and friends. All in all, I loved the film!
BTW, I've been fortunate to have met John, but I am in no way affiliated with "48" (or team Sherpa - that will likely change though...). I went out, saw it, enjoyed it inmmensely, and recommend it to all of you.
