With the bad weather coming in, I did something I almost never do and took off on a Thurs. for Owl's Head. Whether wisely or not, I opted for the river crossing trail route.

Thurs. the rivers and brooks were not high. I was able to rock hop all the crossings all the way to owl's head. Following the path of what were obviously old railroad beds, the trails with a few exceptions here and there were fairly smooth and clear.

There was a cairn marking the Owl's Head slide path. This was a big help as the slide was not visible from the trail. It would have been easy to walk past the herd path, but once on it, it was easy to follow. The slide was relatively dry and straightforward. Above the slide and up on the ridge the herd path was very easy to follow and the blowdowns were not that bad. I followed the path past what I remembered to be the old summit and continued on to a large rock cairn which I assume is the new summit, however, I did not see a summit sign. Not sure  I continued on following the herd path which was now less visible until my GPS showed that I was dropping off the north side of the ridge.

On our way back we met two hikers at the old summit site. They were the only people we saw all day. They had come around the north side of Owl's head to the slide from the thirteen falls camp site.

Despite all the talk about blazes or no blazes, except possibly for the turnoff to the slide, there was never a moment when I felt the trail was so unclear that one would get lost.
