I left Boston with my son Eric, who was a little unhappy about the early start. Of course he fell asleep on the ride north, leaving me talking to myself for most of the trip. We got to the Cog parking lot about 7 AM, and were on the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail by 7:20. Everything was fogged in.
The Ammo was clear, mostly dry, and a pleasant walk. Eric commented that a 2.5 mile hike like this would be nice. I merely smiled and said "yup ." We took a short break at the Gem Pool, had some water and a snack. As we began hiking again, Eric was in the lead. He turned a corner and I heard him say "HEY....it's steep! " I merely smiled and said "yup ."
Up the steeps we went, stopping every now and then for a breath catching break. We stopped at the Gorge, and through the fog we saw the spectacular waterfalls. Back on the trail, we saw that the fog was burning off in the valley, but up high was still socked in. There were some patches of snow in the woods, but the trail was clear. We reached the Lakes of the Clouds Hut about 9:40. Eric was beat. We originally wanted to get to Monroe, then across the Westside Trail to Jefferson, but looking at Eric, it looked like a one peak day. We agreed to go up to Monroe, then figure out what we would do.
Up the Monroe loop we went, the alpine flowers were in bloom. It was beautiful. On Monroe and Little Monroe we got some brief views, but the fog kept blowing in. We went back to the hut, got Eric's pack and decided we would go back down the Ammo. It was an uneventful walk down, and we took a relaxing 20 minute break at the Gem Pool.
We did the tourist thing at the Cog Railroad, then headed home. One of us slept most of the way, with the occasional lifting of his head, asking "are we there yet?" I would smile, and say "yup."
It wasn't the greatest of weather days, but once again Eric and I had a great day in the mountains.
