North Twin #73...South Twin #74...Galehead #75...Garfield(to be determined)
It's the list(NEHH Solo Winter) that motivates me to get to these Wonderful locations...but it's MUCH more than that
Left home @ 3am and got back @ 7:30pm. Going over the top of 118 I was treated to an adrenaline rush as I fishtailed(successfully) around the corner
Had b'fast @ DD in Lincoln. Stashed extra clothes jct Rte 3/Gale River Loop and parked @ end of the 7 Dwarfs Road. Found out later I'd made a mistake...thinking this was the trailhead!? Wore my 25" snowshoes all day w/old ski poles and started @ 6:56.
Had read there was a packed bushwhack along the east side of the river, so headed south on the road(around the chain link fence) past the water tank. Road soon ended w/no sign of a "trail". So, continued south thru the open woods and soon crossed to the west side of the river. After a bit picked up a ski trail which I followed to the road/bridge over the river to the REAL trailhead! Took me a leisurely 50 minutes to cover that easy mile.
From THERE the trail was broken out and easy! Got to the 1st river crossing and "bushwhack" did continue thru the open woods. Crossed @ the 3rd xing and delighted in the gradual trail which only had about 3" of new snow.
As the trail headed up away from the river it finally started to climb
Had read about the steep section...was delighted to find it not bad, except the snow was now about a foot deep and gradually got some drifting. This slowed me down, but was able to marvel at the Beautiful snow covered trees and brilliant blue skies all the more
As the trail flattened out I came to an open spot with the most wonderful views of the presidentials
Arrived @ the wooded summit @ 11:03. The trail thru the woods had generally not shown a packed trail, but wasn't that hard to follow and I hadn't made any wrong turns Found out later I'd helped out the "Pumpkin Patch Gang"
The trail to South Twin showed no signs of being broken either... Got to South Twin @ 12:14...More Great Views from here!!!
Going down to Galehead Hut was a blast and pretty much snowshoe skied down!
I was thrilled to see someone had been there! I followed their track to Galehead and back. Was little behind schedule, would determine about going on to Garfield @ jct Gale River Trail.
To jct @ 1:56...folks had come up the Gale RT and Garfield RT was broken awhile ago. Decided Garfield will be visited later and dropped down. To TH @ 3:40 and to Rte 3 @ 4:18 feeling pretty beat but very thankful for an amazingly beautiful day in the "White" Mountains!!!
