The days just after the Columbus Day weekend have their own special beauty. The crowds have vanished and the vivid colors of early autumn have given way to subtle colors. Oaks and tamaracks are just starting to flash their colors. Moose are in a rarified mood. Seasonal change is in the air.
I saw a nice big cow at dawn along the way to the trail...
moose are just so special in autumn...you can sense intensity in their mood.
The trail in to the notch was very quiet for the first time in a long time. There were a few hikers coming out from the night at the hut. The whole area has a sense of 'calm after the storm'. The late half of October is special.
Shoal Pond...
On the way back from the pond the wind of the past few days finally laid down and the sun was suddenly very warm. A nice flat rock in the river near the bridge beckoned for a nice nap.
Then I was awakened by a gray jay walking around on my chest. I opened my eyes and we startled each other momentarily. Then I had to save my lunch from another jay who was inside my pack!
OK, some bread crumbs for the winter stash...
On the way back I saw a nice young couple who I'd see again...
The trails back were so quiet and warm and colorful...
I was hoping to see a big bull, who I've named Zealand, at the beaver bogs on the way out. It was close to sunset when I got to the bog area. At a point where the trail is away from the bogs I heard a water noise as I quielty stepped down the trail. I left the trail and went over to find a mama and female yearling calf.
mama, making the water noise I heard...
hmmmmmm....yummy grass shoots
mama moose and Canada goose
close-up of the yearling cow, who eventually came out into the clear after watching mama not having a problem with my presence for a long time...
close-up of mama...
happy autumn
