A fine Solstice hike over a couple of VT 4Ks, and a nice day with Arm and skimom.
Up Battell, northbound LT over Abraham, Lincoln, Nancy Hanks and Cutts Peak to Ellen, then down the blue square ski trails. I must be getting slower in my old age, as often all I saw of Arm was the dust off his snowshoe tails. Though we had waited around in the morning for winter to begin before we did, we were still down a good hour or two before dark. More hikers (3) than skiers at Sugarbush North, for the most part. Bewildered looks we got, as always.
Snow depth down low was probably around 6", more like 12-24" variously on the ridge. We encountered no ice to speak of. LT blazes, though often faint, were still well above snowline. Arm did some great trail finding/breaking work and we really only had to reel him back in from off trail once. We put our snowshoes on for good just past the Potato Hill marker.
My wildlife highlight was definitely the snowshoe hare racing across my path up high. Thanks for another great day in the mountains.
