When you see your hiking friends more often in bars than on a trail, you know you have a problem. So when giggy asked if I wanted to join his group to climb Adams Slide, I signed up without much hesitation.

Most of the group were camped out at White Birches the night before, I probably the only one drove up that morning. We met up at 8AM at the Great Gulf trailhead and hit the trail around 8:20 AM. The group were giggy, NH_Mtn_Hiker, arm, Gillian, cbcbd, marchowes, Jen, Jeff, Karen, Woody who we later caught up with at the junction of Great Gulf and Wamsutta Trail and me (the "after thought" :( as Gillian put it :p).

It was a warm sunny morning. Jen commented that there was enough people here that our forces combined finally broke giggy's curse of wet hikes. Apparently giggy has a reputation of bringing rain to his hikes. We strolled along the Great Gulf trail without much incident until while crossing the west branch Peabody River just after the Madison Gulf Trail, giggy slipped on a wet rock and got himself a bloody elbow. "Oh good, now that giggy is wet we probably won't be rained on." said Jen jokingly :D.

We got to Buttress trail just before the talus slope, took a brief break and geared up for the bushwhack up Adams Slide. The bushwhacking wasn't too bad, we spotted a couple of red blazes here and there, some sections of the slide were still in good shape. A couple of places were somewhat confusing, according to NH_Mtn_Hiker our expert bushwhacker, "When in doubt, keep right." Half an hour or so later, we made it out of the woods and embraced by gorgeous views of the Great Gulf and Jefferson Ravine. Simply awesome!!

The bushwhack was over but it was still a way to get to the summit of Adams, we hopped few more rocks, negotiated more short scrubs and one false summit after another.... finally arrived at the real summit around 1:30 PM. Took a long break here and discussed our descent routes. Most of us decided to take Osgood trial back to Great Gulf but 3 uber hikers, Jen, Karen and cbcbd would continue to Mt Washington.

While on our way to Madison Hut, we ran into Dave, Stan, Mad Townie and Bubba. What a nice surprise. We strolled down to the hut together and chatted more there. NH_Mtn_Hiker decided to ditch us and went with Dave's group (Their group had Scotch and Tequila, and we got some filtered water from the stream. which group would you pick?). Dave advised us to climb up Madison to get to Osgood trail instead of taking Parepet trail. So we did...

The real butt kicker of the day was Osgood trail. It went up and down and it was pretty challenging to maintain balance on those sharp rocks and not to swayed by the relentless wind. Despite that, giggy and Gillian flew down the trail, Jeff and I emerged shortly before 6 PM. What a beautiful day to be on the Northern Presi with a this group of amazing hikers, we couldn't ask for a better weather (thanks giggy for sacrificed himself :D)

And of course the fun continued after the hike back at the White Birches. What wonderful weekend, gorgeous weather and great gathering! Thanks all for your company.

The slide looks much different then I'd expected. Bummer about the batteries dying in your camera, I hear the chicken hat made an appearance. Osgood is definitely a tough way to end a long day.

Are Doug, Jen, and Karen going to add their trip report?

Nice report Hui -
:)

fun day, even after stopping for 30 minutes to stop the bleeding elbow - nice gash there  ... my own fault - moving too fast over wet rocks. I never learn. lots and lots of blood ;) - in fact, I was nervous it wasn't going to stop

I thought a report for this might piss some people off, but at the end of the day, anyone with half a brain and sense of adventure could find out about this "lost" trail. If anyone has issues with that, pm me, not Hui - as the trip was my idea and I organized the whole thing - ideally a smaller group would have been better, but what can I say - I have trouble saying no to freinds.

It was not nearly as steep as thought it would be, in fact, I would say if this were a mantained trail, 6 husbands is harder and steeper. It does however, have views of jefferson ravine, that I have not seen before. I wouldn't actually call this a slide at all.

finally had 2 good weather days -

I wouldn't worry too much about anyone giving you flack on "exposing" this lost trail. There was a big writeup in the June 2007 edition of Backpacker magazine on eight different lost trails (including the old O-J-I slide in Baxter)that fully describes the Adams Slide trail. So Backpacker magazine exposed it and beat you to the punch. Now several million people know about it.

J - I think that's where the idea for this hike originally came from.

Not really sure why anyone would find any faults with this trip. A group size of 10 in the wilderness is within the limits, right? As long as they weren't carrying a boom-box blasting Swedish Death Metal and leaving a trail of empty beer bottles behind them I think it's all good... you did pack out the empties, right Giggy?

Only if you stay on trails, off trail the "suggested" maximum is 4

Hmm, now if you have to camp 200' from trail...

Whew! Adams Slide was differant than I expected. It's been a hike I've wanted to do since I heard about it. Dumb question, is it steep as the books say?

The book says:
"Leading to the summit of Mt. Adams for the Six Husbands Trail, the Adams Slide Trail is referred to as the steepest path of its length in the White Mountains. In 1 1/4 mi, it rises 2308 feet."

There is also something about "Care is needed, especially in descending." That figures, I've only been down it carrying a 2 day pack...

the book = WMG, 1969

Its all relative, I would say - no. Its a steep trail, but not exposed (meaning, you couldn't fall a long way). Its steep enough to make you huff and puff, nothing more - the steepest parts are in the trees and its quick - before you know it, your out of the trees and rock hoping. less exposure than 6 husbands, king ravine, great gully, etc..

Huiyeng - great stuff as usual. I love to visit your albums! Let's see... the climb up looked like a fun b/w, the above treeline views are excellent - the one of Marc with Jefferson Ravine behind is awesome. I'm sure that the pic of Doug and Jenn on summit is cbcbd convincing Jenn that a trip to Wash would be "trick" and not too difficult (less you twist your ankle sideways :( ) :p

It was a great day to be in the mountains - meeting up with you guys was great stuff and what gatherings are all about! (I'm so glad that I didn't have the time to consider going over Madison with you... I don't think I needed that Osgood Path pounding).

Oh, yes indeed. He did indeed!! This time with Scotch in hand :D

FTR - Alcohol had nothing to do with NH_Mtn_Hiker's desire to ditch you guys. He heard that a joke-a-thon was in the offing on Valley Way. Sick jokes but the time went by. :) Don't ask...

Come on Mt Washington gang - let's hear your side of the story!

Good TR (and cute kitty avatar too!)

Overall, I was disappointed with my outing on this so-called lost trail. I think because I'd anticipated it to be so much more from the old descriptions. Don't get me wrong, it's fun, just not nearly as difficult as is claimed. IIRC, it isn't at all difficult or even very steep, nor does it truly require compass/gps (simply go uphill 'til there is no more up). If you have an older guidebook, it isn't at all difficult to mark where to find the downhill end. It's just as obvious as some of the other "lost" trails. Kinda takes the thrill out of going places that are less traveled.

I enjoyed the trail. There were some really great views from perspectives I had not seen before. Being the slow-poke in the group I gave myself about a 45 minute head start up the Great Gulf Trail (about 7:45 am) and got to the Wamsutta and Six Husbands trails about 10 minutes prior to the rest of the group. I encouraged the group not to bother to wait for me on the way down and I finally made my way back to the trailhead at about 6:30 pm.

It was a wonderful trip and it was nice to run into Dave, Bubba and Stan and Mad Townie.

I'd like to thank all for making the gathering such a great time. :D

Ridgewalker, it was pretty much what giggy said, the steepest part was in the woods, once you got out of the woods, it was pretty much your typical northern presi rock hopping kinda terrain.

If you're looking to climb something like Arrow Slide or North Slide etc, Adams Slide is not in the same league, but it was still a fun hike. Not exactly like exploring a Mayan ruins, but I sure was thrilled when spotted a couple of old fainted red blazes here and there on the "lost" trail, pretty cool.

Thanks Dugan, Neko indeed is super cute. And Gillian, no worries, we're just goofing around. Besides, I'm very used to being the after thought. Being the youngest in a large family, my evil sibling always taunt me that I'm an accident .

Huiyeng, thanks for writing the report... the responsibility always lies in the one with healthy elbows. It's always great to hike again with all you folks and with new ones - I liked Karen's tenacity and I'm glad her and Jen came for the free pizza on Wash. :D

Geez... those two have to get a move on... or else I'll have to write it ;)
But maybe I will, after I unpack
