Hiked in on Monday, very icy, hard pack. Over 99% covered by snow/ice from Route 2 to summit. Extremely (and unavoidably) icy just below and above Log Cabin. Used 6-points on entire trip from below Log Cabin to hike out on Tuesday, although it softened up considerably on Tuesday afternoon, thankfully. I've done this trip at this time of year at least ten times. I've always used 6-points. I HIGHLY recommend full crampons. I wish I had had them for this trip. I suppose you could head up from Appalachia, but I have no idea what conditions exist there, AND with the strong sun, you can bet the stream crossings will be a challenge.
