Well I made it back and didn't get lost or break an ankle. Weather was excellent in spite of dire forecasts. I will put in complete reports in a day or two, for now I'll summarize.
Tuesday: Drove up early from Boston, parked at the Hale Brook Trailhead on Zealand Road and took the AMC shuttle to the Lafayette Place Campground in Franconia Notch. Hiked up to Lonesome Lake Hut where I registered for the night. Then I hiked up the Fishin' Jimmy Trail to the Kinsman Ridge Trail. The idea was to then cross the Cannonballs and climb Cannon. This was a tactical error. The 'Jimmy was very tough and I ran out of time. I crossed the Cannonballs but due to lack of time and impending rain, I had to skip Cannon and retreat via the Lonesome Lake Trail back to the Hut. I should have simply gone up this trail, climbed Cannon, returned and climbed NE Cannonball (NEHH) and gone back down the way I came, skipping most of the Kinsman Ridge and 'Jimmy trails. So I missed Cannon, but bagged NE Cannonball. There's always a next time.
Wednesday: Long day. I hiked down the Cascade Brook Trail (the AT) from Lonesome Lake, crossed under I-93 and climbed the Liberty Springs Trail to the Ridge. I then took a right, climbed Liberty and Flume, then turned around and hiked the whole ridge line back to Lafayette and descended to Greenleaf Hut. This was around 5700' of elevation gain. Tired!
Thursday: This was to be the Big Day. Well, it was a little less big but satisfying nevertheless. I got up at 4:40 and left the Hut a little after 5:00 AM. Surprise: Lafayette stood above the Hut in full view - no clouds. First time I ever saw that at first light. I climbed Lafy, hiked over to North Lincoln and got on to the north prong of the Lincoln Slide. Went down and scrambled to get out of the gully and follow the stream down. Had some problems but eventually found my way out to Lincoln Brook and the Trail. Hiked down to the Owls Head slide entrance, went up (ouch - steep and exhausting, especially with my overnight pack), and arrived at the OH summit about 11:10 and took about a 35 minute lunch break. It was now about 11:45. Since I was bushed, I made a descision to head to the Franconia Brook Campground tonight rather than trying to bushwhack up Bondcliff and hike over to Guyot. I would however bushwhack down the east side of OH. This was long and tiring and in a word, rather bad (sorry, two words). I tried to stay on the east ridge but ended up in the gully to the north of it. [Edit] After checking the maps and my notes (and memory) I realize I "fell" into the gully/stream to the south of the ridge, not the north. See the full report below (when it gets written ). [End Edit] But eventually I got out to Franconia Brook, and went down that boulevard of a trail, the Franconia Brook Trail, to the Campground. I got there about 4:30 PM, almost 12 hours after leaving the Hut.
Friday: Another long day. I was not giving up my hopes to bag the Bonds and Hale (and I had to get back to my car, far to the north) so what to do? Simple, hike up the Wilderness Trail, do the complete Bondcliff Trail (skipping West Bond), then hike across the Twinway, bag Zealand (for old time's sake) down to the Lend-a-hand Trail, bag Hale, then down to the car. Another 11+ hour day and almost 5800' of elevation. Was I tired? In a word "you better believe it!" (sorry, four words)
I managed to bag 5 new 4ks (Liberty, Flume, Owls Head, Bondcliff and Hale) and one NEHH (NE Cannonball), the weather and views were spectacular, and I made it back in one piece. Life is good!
