Probably too late for you but we encountered only a smattering of snow and very small, easily avoidable patches of ice in a traverse of the Rocky Peak Ridge and Giant on Saturday.
We did the same RPR traverse (New Russia to Chapel Pond) a day later (Columbus Day / Monday the 13th) and it was way too warm (call it hot) and not a trace of snow or ice anywhere. That was probably about the last of summer hiking for the season. Spoke to some people who found themselves in a whiteout on Marcy 5 days later.
