Allen’s Ledge via UNH Trail (15-Dec-07)
Date Hiked: 15-Dec-2007
Conditions: The trail was generally in good shape (see Comments below).
Special Equipment Required: Snowshoes and trekking poles.
Comments:
Allen’s Ledge was the target today for our hearty band of 4 (PatientPlodder, PokeyPuppy, 1HappyHikerette, and 1HappyHiker). And this was a perfect destination for us on this particular day since we had a limited time frame for hiking. Also, none of us were up for mega trail-breaking. So all this considered, we decided to go with something short and something likely to have a trail already broken.
The UNH trail was well broken out for the short distance up to the point where the Hedgehog Loop bifurcates. However, it appeared that since Friday’s snow, no one had been on the west fork leading to Allen’s Ledge. So, even though some trail breaking was needed, it was no big deal. We were happy hikers!!
If you have a limited time frame, but still want a snowshoe hike with some decent views, this would be a hike to consider. There’s more information about this hike in the book “Snowshoe Hikes in the White Mountains” by Steven D. Smith.
