Alpine Touring at Waterville Valley

Here's an article about an alpine touring class at WV. Looks like fun.

They use Snow's Mountain rather than the main ski area for some reason.

I wonder if other ski areas might adopt a similar program and create uphill trails through the woods to attract the AT fraternity.

Very cool. Thanks for posting that up. I’m brand new to AT skiing and am planning on hitting the old ski area at Ascutney later this week for my second outing.

At the old Kings Ridge ski area in New London NH there is a recreation easement on some of the old trails. In the past someone was mowing the trails which made easy access bc skiing possible. The snowmobilers do use some of the trails but the steepest one was relatively clean for skiing and boarding. Use Felch road in Sutton to access the trails.

Also, if there is snow, the auto road up Mt kearsarge in Warner, NH gets used and groomed by the bilers. A midweek or late season run is fun.

Fun day today at Ascutney even if the terrain was a bit challenging after the Nor’Easter. Made it up and down without dying so it’s all good. Really need to gain some downhill comfortability on these AT skis so will likely use them for resort downhilling at Stratton during my next play day during February break.

Thought I was gonna drive by the old Hogback ski area (on my way out today) but my GPS pulled me on a northern route.

Thanks jfb! Lots of great possibilities to keep me busy for awhile. Thunderbolt Trail (which I’ve hiked before) is definitely on my radar, but I think I’m likely to enjoy it more next year after I get better at this.

The lower part of Greylock Glen has trails that are lower angle and the trees are further apart. Labeled Ski Meadow and Picard's Pasture on the map.
