Looks like the AMC changed its website sometime this morning. The new one is prettier but not, after a brief look, much more substantive than the old one. One thing I did not see, however, was their message board. It appears to have disappeared completely. After the demise of M&M it had gotten creaky and not used much, but still it's unfortunate that one source of information and discussion is, apparently, gone.

Nope - it is there.

Put your mouse over "About AMC" and it's on the bottom, "Bulletin Boards".

You're right - it is still there. Guess I made a mountain out of a molehill all by myself.

Don't feel too bad about being momentarily confused; you're not alone. From the AMC Moderator this morning:

Hi all,
I know there has been some confusion in the last few weeks about how the BBS is represented in the new site design. In addition to remaining at its current address (http://appalachia.outdoors.org/bbs), the boards are accessible via the "About the AMC" dropdown menu on the homepage ("AMC Bulletin Boards" is at the bottom of the list) and specific discussions are referenced around the site as appropriate (e.g. Hiker Journal is mentioned on our hiking pages, etc.)
As we all become accustomed to the new layout, I certainly welcome feedback and constructive thoughts ([email protected]) as to how we might continually better the BBS and its presentation on the website.
Thanks in advance to you all for your patience with the changes - we hope you enjoy the new site!

My boycott of the AMC board is still in place, until Mountains and Molehills returns.

I use a direct link from a local links file (the URL to the BBS didn't change), so I was unaware of any changes on the home page until the moderator posted the change on the BBS this morning But when I looked at the home page, it was clear that I would have had difficulty finding it. The label on the drop-down menu reads "AMC Bulletin" on my browser (Mozilla 1.7.12 on Linux) which, to me suggests news items, not a BBS.

(I have posted a suggestion for a better label over on the AMS BBS.)

Wow! I'm impressed ...
?

I was just identifying my environment in case anyone else wanted to compare. (A "certain large computer OS company" is infamous for violating network standards.)

And using Linux is quite normal for old Unix users.

Methinks this is getting off topic...

Perhaps there had been a notice on their website that the site was to receive a major overhaul, but if it had been then I for one missed it.

there was a full page announcement in AMC outdoors magazine on page 20 and 1/2 page on 38.

Many users of the BBS do not get AMC outdoors mag.

It might have been nice if a notification of impending access change had been posted on the BBS _before_ the change occured. Placing an annoucement after the change doesn't help those who cannot find it.

As I said, I use a direct link, so it didn't affect me personally.

I use (primarily) the XP version of Mozilla Firefox, currently at 1.0.7. On my browser it reads "AMC Bulletin Boards" so perhaps it's being truncated in the Linux version? I double-checked it with IE (SP 2) and it also reads the same. Methinks it's something to do with your browser.
I just tried it with (Linux) Firefox and the full label was displayed, but using a smaller font than on Mozilla. I reduced the minimum font size (these eyes aren't as young as they used to be...) on Mozilla and got the full label. So, for what ever reason, the label truncates rather than wraps.

I can also create the problem if I increase the minimum font size on Firefox.

I'll post this over on the AMC BBS.

Thanks,

Doug
