The University of Chicago has published American Environmental Photographs , a collection of photos by botanists. The botanists were documenting species and their distributions in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Virtually the entire U.S. is represented; you can search by geographic location and other terms. Here's one of my favorites from the White Mountains.. Click on the photo to enlarge it if you go there; I think it's a nice piece of mountain photography with some pretty cumbersome equipment.
I'd enjoy hearing here from anyone who scans the NH list and can fill in any missing locations in the photo credits.
