Sunday we drove up but it was raining, so we decided to go to Whiteface for some wedding recon. When we got to the toll gate, they informed us that the elevator was closed for repairs, and that we could not go higher than the parking lot. When we said we would take the steps, we were informed we could not! Because 'they are too wet' !!! Needless to say the Winter 46'Rs in us reacted with a mixture of dismay, disdain, and amusement at this pronouncement!
But we figured tomorrow was another day, and so we turned around and headed back to Lake Placid.
The annual dinner was very nice, and we cheered for Timmus, Cantdog, Zero-G and others as they got their awards.
Pete Hickey also recieved a patch for over 1046 hours of trailwork! Amazing and way to go Pete! We'll be joining him in 2 weeks for some work on Dix.
Anyway, back to Ampersand. Mavs told us that the trailhead was overflowing Saturday, so we decided to get an early start. We were hiking by 8:00. We were the first ones up to the summit, passing a father and son along the way.
The hike was great! The bugs stayed away and we were up to the summit by around 10:00. The summit was very windy, forcing us to don pants, fleeces, hats and gloves. There was just a tiny amount of snow hiding under a cliff face just before the top. The views of the Sewards and Sawtooths were great! We found a spot out of the wind and enjoyed the day.
The hike back down was quick and we met over 30 people heading up.
After this, we drove the long way around to Whiteface, going North out of Saranac Lake on 3, and winding around to the Memorial Highway. We drove up and parked at the castle. From there, we took the short hike up to the summit, again bundled up against the wind. We met a few peakbaggers and chatted with some of the staff. They were very friendly and helpful.
A beautiful weekend in the DAX!
