Route: Appalachia ->Valley Way -> Madison Hut -> Osgood Tr ->Mt. Madison -> Star Lake -> Adams ->Lowe’s Path -> Gulfside Tr -> Jefferson Loop -> Jefferson -> Mt Clay Loop -> Mt Washington -> Tuckerman Ravine Tr -> Lion Head -> Tuckerman Ravine Tr -> Joe Dodge
Valley Way: Spotted snow at 3300 ft, then spotty short segments of late phase monorail which become continuous at 4200 ft.
Osgood Tr: Dry.
Star Lake Tr: Two small spring snowfields, very easy to cross
Lowe’s Path: Dry.
Gulfside Tr: Some stretches of snow, some wet segment, nothing major.
Jefferson Loop: Two fairly large snowfields, but easy to cross
Mt Clay Loop: Dry.
Mt Washington: Dry.
Snack Bar: First day open. Closes at 18:00
Tuckerman Ravine Tr: Dry. Closed at the point of Lion Head junction.
Lion Head: Two or three fairly large snowfields that are easy to cross and muddy in the scrub sections above the tree line. Below the tree line, there were still quite some stretches of snow with one short section that was carved out of a snow wall.
Tuckerman Ravine Tr: First half mile of packed snow offering highly desired cushioning but not slippery, then snow became intermittent for the next half of a mile. The last mile was completely dry.
Dinner at Joe Doge: Hearty and delicious as always, provided by the most friendly staff.
Special Equipment Required:
Snow shoes or crampons – negligibly useful.
Hiking poles – very useful.
