Our plan was to climb Picketpost Mountain, but things don’t always go as planned. We found the trailhead with no issues after an hour and a half delay in traffic. The LPGA Tournament at Superstition Mountain was going on as well as the renaissance festival.
Once at the trailhead the start was rather easy to find but the turn off to the mountain wasn’t. First of all we forgot the trailguide in the hotel room so we were winging it. I remembered the directions to the trailhead but no specifics of the trail. We followed the Arizona Trail which started in Utah and will run all the way to Mexico. The problem was it’s was the more beaten path so we followed it in hopes it was the right one. It wasn’t. We realized this rather early but decided to keep going anyhow to see what we could see. This trail is rather newly constructed and meanders through the foothills for 5 miles to where it just stops on the side of a 3000 plus foot mountain. Apparently they stopped construction for the weekend.
We’re here in the middle of no where on the side of a mountain-unnamed from what I could tell-so we climbed it. Pretty steep but very open with mostly sand and rock-very little cacti or bushes. The summit was a 360 degree view absolutely amazing. The summit was covered in cow dung, being located in a free range ranch. So we aptly named the mountain POS Peak. The hike out was a long very hot walk and I picked up a few souvenirs along the way. A few Joshua tree skeletons and many rocks-the issue is now not to over weigh my bags, and not pick up any more stuff.
Not much of a trip report, pretty uneventful. Maybe our last days hike will be more adventurous.
