Hey, we may have had a foiled Rooster Comb attempt, but we still did Arm’s 115th
Arm is one modest guy, but I couldn’t resist posting a trip report for his 115th on Basin Oct 8th.
I arrived at the Rooster Comb Parking lot at 5am (an hour early), only to be met by HarryK about 45 minutes later. He drove up to the Garden PL to see if there were any spots open (there were not), and soon enough Arm, Skimom, Swamp, and Jay H. all showed up for our epic adventure…
We shuttled everyone from the RC PL to the Garden PL, and Arm drove back to take the 3 dollar shuttle back to the Garden.
We all met at the John’s Brook Lodge to re-group, and then headed towards Saddleback. We briefly thought about postponing this trip to wait for a better weather day because we noticed a small cloud interrupting the endless blue sky, but soon realized that it was just from a jet, so we continued on…
Soon we were on the summit of Saddleback, and HarryK told us about the fun (steep) climb down to the col between Basin. This part of the hike was quite enjoyable…
A short time later we were heading up the steep icy trail to Basin. This was quite tricky. Too little ice for crampons, and too much ice to get hurt on. Good thing there were trees to hold on to… We made our way up slowly, and soon enough we were standing on the summit with Arm celebrating his 115th! We had quite the party going on for about an hour, with lots of other hikers joining in. Even had an appearance from Snap, Crackle, and Pop, from the Rice Krispy’s add….
After the celebration, we headed back down the icy slopes back down and back up the steep ledges of Saddleback. It was much easier going up than going down!
We then headed down to the col of Gothics and decided on taking the cable route up Gothics, and head all the way out via the mighty Rooster Comb. Hey that’s where most of our cars were parked…
The cable route up Gothics was fun! I personally don’t think they need a cable, but I can see why some people might get freaked out.
From Gothics to Armstrong went well, then we headed off to Lower Wolf Jaw. After LWJ, there was some discussion about our itinerary.
When we reached the col to Upper Wolf Jaw (with darkness approaching), we weighed our options…. But the one thing that kept coming up was “Rooster Comb”. Most of us have already done most of these peaks, but we haven’t done the magnificent “Rooster Comb” (2692’), and our cars were parked at the trailhead . So, we headed up the 700 vertical feet to Upper Wolf Jaw (hoping to get a glimpse of the majestic Rooster Comb as the sun was setting, but to no avail)…. We re-grouped again, put on our headlamps, and headed down towards our main goal….
Soon we reached the Deer Brook Trail, bailed on Rooster Comb, and headed back down to Rt 73 and to our vehicles… The mighty Rooster Comb will have wait for another day….
All in all it was a fun day with some fantastic people!
Congrats again Arm on your 115!
