I got some time to wander along and off the AT in Hanover the last couple of days, and found some cool things:

A skull? No! After searching it seems to be a heron pelvis...

jason I would agree that it is a heron pelvis. I am trying to get scale for the leaves and the grass. It seems right.

Did you find any other bones in the area? These carcasses have a way of getting scattered.

Thanks, Puck. There were feathers, but they looked like they'd been there a while. I spent a few minutes looking for other bones, but not too long. It was neat to see so many herons in one place! The nests looked more than a couple years old....some had grass growing in them....Do they use reuse nests? Is it the same birds each year, or first come, first served?

Anyway, it was a cool place to happen across in the woods!:D

I would have to look that one up...few birds reuse old nests. Great horned owls will take over old Red tail nests but for the most part birds build from scratch.

I was thinking about you sap bucket....if you could whittle out the spout, I think it may be one of the old cast iron ones, you could sell it in an antique store for $1.25 to a flatlander.

Excellent, I could make a quick $6.25 myself then.

Nice! There are quite a few of those old rope tows areas out there, aren't there? It's amazing how many of them still have remains if you look closely.
