AT from 302 to Zealand Falls Hut

Sunday 3/22--Monday 3/23/09

Hard-packed snow (about 35-40 inches) nearly all the way. Snow remained stable given cold temps. Crusty and icy in places. Off established trail, though, major post-holing.

Some traction very helpful and perhaps essential in places. I was happy with microspikes. Had snowshoes with me--if temps had gone up much, would have needed them.

A beautiful couple of days to be out there. Trail well-established all the way from US 302 parking area 3.7 south of Highland Ctr to ZF hut. (I could not find trail past Ethan Pond in 10 inches of powder last month--it veers unexpectedly to left at one point and snow was so high some blazes were buried). Blazes about knee-high now. I went off established "trail" on way back where the AT had been bypassed for about 1/5 mile--major postholing! should have put on snowshoes for that--any longer and I would have had to. Trail is a little sketchy in places over rock slide under Whiteface, but just passable with microspikes.
