Date of Hike: May 10 - May 11
Trail Conditions: I walked the following trails: Velvet Rocks, Hanover Center, Moose Mountain, Holts Ledge, Lambert Ridge, Ranger, Daniel Doan, and J.
All except Daniel Doan were pleasant -- mostly dry, snow-free, ice-free. First snow seen near summit of Smarts Mountain (elevation 3230 ft). Ranger Trail was muddy at lower elevations. J Trail north of Smarts had some snow, but insignificant. Daniel Doan Trail on northside of Smarts was *miserable* with multiple stretches of snow on steep rocks; max snow depth only 1.5 feet, but it was over mud; snow was hollowed out underneath by meltwater; trail was river-like or swamp-like most of route; a few downed trees.
Special Equipment Required: Standard summer gear. For Daniel Doan Trail need extra time and patience with mud/snow/ice, but equipment won't help.
Comments: I did Smarts twice. NOBO over the modern AT, then a 1.4 mile roadwalk in Quinttown, and then SOBO over the older AT.
