Here I go again planning my next section hike of Maine. This will be a moderately leisurely day hiking trek along the AT from Monson to Flagstaff Lake. I have the mileages, access points, elevation profile, sites and car shuttles all plotted out.

Now, my question is accommodations.
(1) In Monson, Pie Lady or Shaw's or someplace else you recommend?

(2) Accommodations in Bingham, Moscow or Solon, ME? Any recommendationsor other suggestions? I have checked out websites for Mrs. G's B&B, Evergreens Campground (cabins), and Pierce Hill Cabins. Interested in a place with a number of twin beds for a small group.

Lastly if anyone is interested, we are going Sun. 9/26 thru Sun. 10/2. Let me know if you want more detailed itinerary.

I reccomend Shaw's in Monson. Get to know the old man a little. He won't be around forever. Young Keith is very good and active at shuttling and slacking. He could possibly save you a little of your own shuttling which might extend your hiking days.

Are you ending at the east end of Flagstaff (Long Falls Dam Road) or also crossing the Bigelows?

Couple of good side trips: Bald Mountain North Peak (blueberries) and you must do breakfast at Harrison's Pierce Pond Camp. Really nice place just north of Pierce Pond.

Depends what you are looking for. In september, Shaws will be packed. I stayed with the Pie Lady (Shaws was full when I got to town) and had a great time. She is a bit gruff at first, but the house was great and she made some fantastic meals.

I had heard some amazing things about Shaws too, however. But plan on them being full at the end of September.

I was at Shaw's last year when I finished the 100 Mile Wilderness and met all the Shaw's. Had a nice stay, but I heard equally as nice comments about Pie Lady so thought I'd ask before returning to Shaw's.
Yes, I know the Shaw's do alot of shuttling hikers around. Have to factor price of gas, time and cost of their service to decide if I will use their shuttle service.

As for where I am ending - East Flagstaff Road on the east end of the lake. Bigelows, Crockers and all the 4,000 footers (except Old Speck) planning on next year - 2005. Yes, I am planning on doing the spur to Bald Mountain - North Peak. Skipping Pierce Pond Camp, doesn't fit well into my itinerary. I am gathering info now so I will make reservations to eliminate the potential of a no vacancy sign after a long hike.

Bringing this trip up to the forefront as I am now accepting participants for this trip as plans are being finalized. Again this is a 60 mile section of the AT from Monson to Flagstaff Lake that will be day-hiked southbound with car shuttling. We will be staying at Shaw's Boarding House in Monson & a cabin in the Bingham area. The dates for this venture are Sun. 9/26 thru Sat. 10/2. E-mail me at: [email protected] if you have any interest in my detailed itinerary.
