An early peakbagger:

"The first recorded ascent of Katahdin by Euroamericans came on Aug 13, 1804, when a party led by Charles Turner Jr. reached the summit by the same rocks-and-roots route used by the A.T. - the Hunt Trail." ~ from the 2004 ALDHA Companion

Charlie and his friends left a lead tablet on the summit with thier names and the date inscribed on it.

I'll be up there camping with my youngest two kids this August 13th, if the weather's good we'll start up the mountian about 5AM.

I hope you have a great day. There are terrific views up there. There's no easy way up Katahdin so a 5:00 am start is a good idea. Keep in mind that if you are staying outside the park you want to be at the gate before 5:00 am so you can get a spot in the parking lot you want.

If you're at Roaring Brook check out the pond a short distance away. The name escapes me at the moment, but it's a hot spot for moose watching.

Good advice about lining up at the gate, a situation I always avoid by reserving a campsite in advance. On peak (pun?) weekends, visitors often line up after the bars in Millinocket close and sleep in their cars.
I always start up at first light when staying at Katahdin Stream, so the kids are used to early mornings. They've been to Baxter Peak before, so I'll 'read' them to see if we get all the way up in August. It might be a late night, the Persieds are peaking during our stay, and they're awesome from the slabs above Katahdin Stream Falls.

It's called Sandy Stream Pond, with Katahdin as a backdrop for your moose photos. Gets lots of foot traffic from the campground, and the deer and moose can seem almost tame. But they ain't!
