Hiking buddies: Grumpy Gran, JonB, Silverfox and Cymbidium
Trails: Baldface Circle Tr., Slippery Brook Tr., Baldface Knob Tr., Meader Ridge Trail and the Mt. Meader Tr.
The first day of Autumn in Evans Notch was a little overcast but warm and calm. This was a peak bagging day for 52 WAV fans. We started our loop hike on the Baldface Circle trail off 113. It was a gentle walk to the Slippery Brook Trail and quick climb to the Eastman Mtn Tr. The trails in this area are well maintained by the Chatham Trails Assn. We helped out by clearing some small blowdowns from the last storm. The Mt. Eastman spur trail was a little brushy in spots but it was a dry quick climb to the top with nice views awaiting us.
Mount Eastman Summit:
We doubled back and continued on to the Baldface Knob Tr.and the Baldface Circle Tr. and the views just got better and better. Lots of open ledge and lowbush blueberry rock gardens everywhere. Here are some of the highlights of this part of our hike.
Ancient lava flow was out path to S. Baldface.
Lovely natural rock gardens abound in this area:
Looking down the shoulder of S. Baldface.
More alpine gardens.
North Baldface summit with cool cairn.
After lunch on North Baldface we headed over to Eagle Crag and the Meader Ridge Trail. On the way over to our last peak we encountered the only mud of the day in a swampy area known as the Bear Traps.
GrumpyGran, JonB and Silverfox on Meader summit.
The decent via the Mount Meader trail was steep at first with a few switchbacks then eased to a moderate hike out with good footing all the way back to 113 (.6 miles from the car).
Today we bagged 4 52WAV peaks: Mt. Eastman 2939', S. Baldface 3570', N. Baldface 3610' Eagle Crag 3030' and Mt. Meader 2782' ( these last two only count as one for some reason)
14.7miles for Cymbidium, Grumpy Gran and JonB.
15.3 miles for Silverfox who went to get the car for us. (what a guy).
This was a long, hard hike for me. It seemed more difficult that the Bonds Traverse I did a few weeks ago for some reason. The best views loop hike I have ever done!!!!
