Skiing in from the Loj was somewhat slick but OK. The Sat 12/29 rain/thaw then refreeze hurt areas below about 2400 ft. (may be covered by now). The many skiers & shoers tended to break up any granular snow and the trail was fairly wide (crusty off to the side however). With S. Meadow unavailable to cars for the rest of the winter this 2.3 mile trip is now 1.2 miles shorter to Marcy dam – but not for beginners with the many ups & downs and turns. Snow above Marcy dam was all powder with excellent cover all the way to Lake Colden. Skiing off to the side for control no problem above Marcy dam. Avalanche Lake mostly snow covered and not too hardpacked – easily skiable, and with no wind and temp above 20, it was downright hospitable.
I saw people with nearly a full range of equipment. Metal edges helpful but not necessary. One report from another skier had the trail up Marcy good at least to Indian falls.
