Hiked with a work crew up the Peabody Brook Trail to open a new spur trail that leads to the ledges on Bald Cap Peak where there are excellent vistas of the northern Presidentials and Androscoggin Valley. This yellow-blazed trail departs from the south side of the Peabody Brook Trail about 0.5 mile west of the junction with the Dryad Falls Trail. A formal announcement will be forthcoming from the Shelburne Trails Club.
The Peabody Brook Trail was overall in good condition. There are segments on the upper end that could use some brushing, but the trail corridor is easily followed.
Also, be aware that the bog bridges on the upper portion of the Peabody Brook Trail are EXTREMELY slippery when wet!
The new Bald Cap Peak Ledges Trail is in good shape. It could use some hiker traffic to harden the treadway.
(Click HERE for a photo collage which shows the sign for the new Bald Cap Peak Ledges trail, plus two snapshots taken from the ledges in autumn 2011 when work began on this trail.)
