Hiked in from Beaver Kill Rd. Trailhead on the Dry Brook Ridge and Balsam Lake Mtn trails., trails were in great shape, no blowdown, mostly dry, definitely no snow around. Bugs were out, wind kept them at bay, but bring a headnet and spray on a calm day. Ascent can be done in trail shoes easily. Firetower is in excellent shape, as well as the cabin. There is a picnic table and pit privy there also. Saw a large hare at the summit. Only concerns on the trip were that Beaverkill Rd is dangerously narrow and windy for the last few miles, stay alert for other drivers. The only other detractor was the heavy machinery working at the Balsam Lake Club at the start of the trail. Other than that a spectacular hike to a firetower with excellent views of the Western Catskills.
