EDIT, The section of trail between Basin Trail and Mt Meader trail along the ridge is actual a continuation of the Basin Rim trail.

I had a opportunity to join the "North Country" crew (Lefty is on VFTT) to do a bit of redlining on Saturday. We spotted a car at Mt Meader trailhead and then started at the Basin. The woods up to the ridgelin look like the fall, everything is real dry and no bugs although a few of use detected a few black flies in the vicinity. The basin trail down low goes through a large flat area with lots of side paths associated with the Basin Pond and its easy to take a wrong turn in spots, blazes are not frequent. We did the spur to the waterfalls but the flow was reimiscient of late summer. The run up to Rim junction was uneventfull with the trail in excellent condition. The run along the Meader Ridge trail did have a few icy stretches in shady areas but most could be avoided by some off trail rock hopping. Mt Meader trail was in excellent condition coming down hill and definitely reminded us all of fall conditions with a thick layer of old dry leaves making things slippery in spots. Thsi trail is definitely recomended for before leaf out as the views through the hardwoods are extensive but will soon disaprear.

The only major issue of the day is the last section of Mt Meader trail where it goes onto public property. The trail ends at a T intersection with recent evidence of logging, there are no signs of blazes, so we followed the main gravel road by taking a right. The road goes past a number of camps in various states of repair. We eventually came out on to Rt 113. As we were coming out if wasnt a major issue but to someone starting at RT 113, it would be a challenge to pick up the turn left onto the actual trail.

I want to thank Lefty and Priscilla in inviting us on a bit of redlining as I has never been on either trail. I had come with summer hiking gear at the ready but at the last minute switched back to my winter/spring boots, given the dry trail condition and temps, I wish I had brought the trail runners.

Overall a nice "fall" hike in April
