I just received the summer edition of Forever Wild, the newsletter of Friends of Baxter State park.
In it is a "State of the Park" report by BSP Director Jensen Bissell that provides some interesting reading.
While he touches briefly on the AT vs. BSP issue, what's more interesting is the commitment the Park is making to trail maintenance and development. Unlike previous administrations which neglected the trails, Bissell seems all-in on maintaining and improving trails. The Trautmann Trail Improvement Initiative list 11 trails where work is planned, starting with the relocation of parts of the Abol Slide and N. Brother trails. Hunt and Helon Taylor are also on the short list. This agenda is great to see after the North Peaks Trail work already completed.
Another change is that all trail work is being done by the Maine Conservation Corps rather than park staff.
Bissell also writes about changes related to global warming, implying that the Park will adjust its schedule based on what the climate is doing. For example, earlier openings in low snow years. later closures in warm fall years.
The Summer 2015 newsletter is not yet posted on the Friend's web site, but I assume it will be soon.
