TRAILS: Unknown Pond, Kilkenny Ridge-Mt. Cabot, Bunnell.

The unknown pond trail is wet and over grown in many places but otherwise in pretty good condition. There were no blowdowns. The stream crossings were easy although on the third crossing there is a large flat rock that sits above the water and looks like a good place to step. It was as slippery as if it were covered with ice and I went flat on my stomach.

From Unknown Pond to the summit of Cabot there are three blowdowns. One is a crawl under, one a duck under and one a step over.

The Kilkenny trail from the summit to the Bunell trail was in pretty good condition with no blowdowns.

The Bunnell trail had one high stepover blowdown. The Bunell trail from the top is bony at first but the footing gets progressively better as you go down.

Bugs were not a factor today.

There was sufficient water for Lauky to drink all along the trail.

The summit flag today was well staffed with a hall of fame roster of VFTTers.

On the way up to Unknown Pond Lauky and I had a face to face bear encounter. He was on the trail ahead of us. As we came up on him I saw him and he heard me at almost exactly the same moment. He rose to a standing position and turned and faced me. In a quick couple of seconds I reviewed in my mind all the bear articles I had read in BACKPACKER. We stood there face to face. Just then Lauky who had had his nose to the ground obviously tracking the bear looked up and saw him. He let out a growl and bark and the bear turned and ran. Lauky tried desperately to go after him but that impulsiveness is the main reason he stays on a leash. Lauky told the bear what he'd do to him if he ever caught him, but thanks to the leash he lives to go on another hike.

Elevation gain with the Horn: 3500
Milage: 10.5
