I'd say that bear made a mistake ;-) not much food up there. Next time, papa bear, just go around the big rock...you might find some food along the way.

We found a tremendous amount of cranberries above tree line recently in BSP ...

Plenty of berries above treeline, generally the mountain cranberries are quite numerous, they tend to be pretty hard and tart until a few frosts.

Bears have also been known to feed on concentrations of insects in rockfields, including above timberline.

Plenty of berries up there. I ran across berry-filled bear scat on Hamlin Ridge a couple of weeks ago.

Just missed a big black bear by 3 minutes last thurs. 10-2-14 on south peak on knife edge. The hiker coming the other way got pix of bear. I was bummed not to catch a glimpse.
