Bears at Marcy Dam?

The subject of bears in the central ADK's has been quiet for awhile. This time last year it seemed like the bears were running rampant.
I was going to be in Lake Placid with the family next weekend for the half marathon and wanted to hike into marcy dam in the late afternoon with the kids, and hopefully observe a bear or two.
Have the bears been active in this area and if so are they coming out in the late afternoon?

They seem to come out around dusk.
