I planned to head for Aroostook County this morning to try 7 smallish peaks in the far northern reaches of Maine over the next few days-think mostly above Allagash/Dickey. The weather forecast deteriorated in the last 36 hours and I left at 3 AM with rain in Orrington, heavy rain at Frenchville Airport in The County and a predicted high of 40 with strong winds. I had extra boots/socks/clothing for the inevitable quick soaking in the woods, but was leary of the temp/winds (it was headed to 25 tonight). About 10 miles from home I decided "whoa, this is at least slightly stupid" and went back to bed--tuff, as i hate to "bail".

-plan B--Big Hill-1169', #154 on the ME P list and south of Bangor off Rt 1A. Drove 1A to Green Lake late this morning, wound in around the lake and up a paved road past some $$ new houses. The road turned to dirt, was soon "rocked" and had a few oldish "you can't do nothing in here" signs.

I parked, skirted the immediate area on a skidder road and picked up the diminishing road higher on the mountain. It was an easy walk to an old log landing where i guessed wrong and took skid/herd path that disappeared. That didn't prove a major problem as the woods were only moderate density and all leafy trees (no torture today). The last 0.3 was a 'whack; the summit was flat, but with an clear ledge top festooned with survey tape. The views are long gone (the top was heavily cut many years back), but the area was fairly open and good to just hang out in for a bit. I headed down another way on the ridge line and had some excellent views before descending into the woods again--nothing of note on the descent save an encounter with a large animal who was alas only a set freshly cleaned/strewn bones in my path.

So why do i post these TRs which hold little interest for many VFTTers?--well....i really like the prominence peaks for reasons mentioned before and would never have gotten into them if it hadn't been for Papabear's descriptive TRs and 50 Finest stuff on his site. I hope a few might try these and see little chance of overuse :). I realize there are various points of view about how much (if any) info to post on hikes like this, but i am willing to share whatever i can if you e-mail

edit--well, i blew the call on this weekend--it may have been a bit wet Friday, but i'd have had a cold, but no rain Sat/Sun for The County journey --
