trails: big spencer mountain trail
conditions: the roads into this trailhead were all in good condition and the route is described in the amc maine mountain guide. the trail is in great shape and was pretty dry today up to the site of the old firewardens cabin. shortly beyond beavers have built a dam across a small stream completely blocking the trail and a beaten path circles around. here the trail begins to climb steeply and was generally wet and some of the rock required care. short ladders were in place on a couple of pitches. from the radio towers and helipad (where the trail ends) we continued through a newly cleared and burned over area with a new cell tower then bushwacked about .3 miles sw to the true highpoint of the mountain. woods were moderately thick and scrappy. some poking around got us to multiple ledges with great views.
equipment: nothing in particular.
comments: great hike. some awesome views to the moosehead lake area and to baxter state park. clouds lifted while we were up there providing a nice look at kathadin. a very impressive mountain when viewed from the nearby roads and from points around moosehead lake. nice to finally visit after seeing it from baxter on a number of occasions.
