Great weather, but long hike (5 miles 1-way and 3000 vrt?). Begin of hike at low altitude and trees was a nusaunce - very warm. Guidebook is correct as the trail rises VERY rapidly (1500 vrt ft?) after the tent platform (which is on the Left of trail) to the col in the last 0.5-1.0 mile up a superb 'staircase'. Whoever designed and built it should be mentioned in the AMC Guidebook. Flies concentrated on my wife. Heard something quite large moving very fast and crunching thru the thick brush like a tank about 15 minutes uphill of the tent platform (BF?).
Did Sugarloaf the day before. At my age I should rest a day between hikes as I had not much left in the uphill gear after that. Going downhill was easy and a welcomed relief.
