I had planned on taking horn pond trail but my mind was elsewhere and the at was well broken out post thaw by snowshoers so i took that up to the ridge, I think this route was a few miles longer than the horn pond trail route? Well packed, easy to follow trail to south horn. North horn wasnt broken out but I went over to it to see how the views were. No sign of activity between south horn and west peak. Sorry for the minor postholing, the trail switched from real firm and bony to shin deep windslab, back and forth the whole way but i spent the whole day in microspikes. Strong wind on the summits but I was happy they were virtually ice free, unlike saddleback right now (can leave the crampons and snowshoes in the car). One set of tracks descended from avery and I followed those and the good snowshoe track out via firewardens trail. Horn pond looked like only a single pair of tracks had gone up so taking the at by accident worked out well.
I felt like I 'stole' this one, just 6h in winter and got greedy going for snow cop (but hard to actually call it an attempt). With the active logging I was all thrown off and hadnt bothered to load a gps track in advance. My mistake and will have to do my homework before heading back. I gave up after almost 3h of venturing through all the various logging areas for the road...would have been faster to just say eff it and go for it, lesson learned. Thanks to those that broke trail on the Bigelows, much appreciated.
